LASIK, short for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a laser vision correction procedure that treats refractive errors like nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. These errors occur when the eye is slightly too long or too short, or the cornea is irregularly curved. Light entering the eye misses its target on the retina, and vision looks blurry.

During LASIK, your surgeon uses specialized lasers to precisely reshape the cornea so light focuses exactly where it should. The result is crisp, clear eyesight, often with little or no need for glasses or contacts.

What Happens During LASIK?

LASIK is an outpatient procedure performed in the Laser Suite at our Harrisburg office. Plan on a 1-2 hour visit. The surgery itself takes just 20-30 minutes for both eyes, with the remaining time for paperwork and rest before and after.

You'll receive relaxation medication and settle into a comfortable reclining chair while we check your vitals and numb your eyes with anesthetic drops. A small eyelid holder gently keeps you from blinking.

Your surgeon first uses the femtosecond laser to create a thin, hinged flap on the surface of the cornea. You may feel some pressure at this stage. The flap is folded back, and the excimer laser reshapes the tissue underneath according to your prescription. This step takes only minutes, and eye-tracking technology pauses the laser at the slightest movement until your eye is perfectly repositioned.

Finally, the flap is laid back into place, where it begins healing right away, no stitches needed. After a short rest in our recovery area, you'll head home with post-op instructions, eye drops, and a protective shield. Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you, then take it easy. A nap is the perfect way to kick off the healing process.

What is LASIK Recovery Like?

As your eyes heal, it's normal to notice temporary effects such as:

Mild soreness
Itching or burning
Hazy vision

Excess tearing
Sensitivity to light
Dryness

For at least the first week, steer clear of:

Pools, hot tubs, lakes, and other water sources that can harbor bacteria
Dusty or dirty settings, including gardening and yard work

Strenuous exercise
Eye makeup

Most importantly, don't rub your eyes while the corneal flap heals, as doing so can lead to infection or other complications. Mention any lingering symptoms at your post-op visit, and call your doctor if they persist.

It can take a few months for your vision to fully stabilize, but you'll keep noticing improvements along the way and discovering just how much clear vision changes your daily life.

Numbing drops block pain before the procedure begins. Everyone’s comfort level is different, but most patients don’t find LASIK painful.

Presbyopia, the age-related need for reading glasses or bifocals, isn’t a refractive error, so standard LASIK can’t correct it. It happens because the eye’s natural lens gradually stiffens over time, which is why even people with lifelong 20/20 vision start holding menus and text messages at arm’s length around age 40.

However, monovision LASIK, which corrects one eye for distance and the other for near vision, may be a good alternative to readers or bifocals for some patients.

The most common side effects are dry eye (which may last 3-6 months), fluctuating vision, and haloes at night, all of which typically improve over time. Your surgeon will review less common risks with you before your procedure. As with any surgery, outcomes can’t be guaranteed.

We schedule LASIK on Thursdays, with your one-day post-op visit on Friday. That gives you the whole weekend to recover and keeps time away from work to a minimum. Most patients return to normal, non-strenuous activities within the first week. Be sure to keep every follow-up appointment, and discuss your specific job demands with our Refractive Coordinator before scheduling.

Most patients achieve 20/20 vision, with results stabilizing over the first 2-3 months. Healing varies, though. About 5% of patients lose some of their correction and need an enhancement within the first year.

Eyes, like the rest of the body, also change with age. Presbyopia or cataracts later in life may eventually mean reading or distance glasses, though cataracts can ultimately be corrected surgically to restore both near and far vision.

Price alone can’t measure surgical quality, but it can offer clues. Across the US, advanced modern LASIK with a highly experienced surgeon typically costs $4,000 to $6,000 for both eyes, or roughly $2,500 per eye on average.

Quotes far below that range usually point to older technology. Bilateral LASIK priced under $3,000 likely involves non-wavefront treatment using an older femtosecond laser or a microkeratome blade. When deciding where to have LASIK, weigh the technology and your surgeon’s experience, not just the number on the quote.
